Estonian music and musicians have been called the greatest export of the Republic of Estonia. Examples of their artistic strength need not be sought from distant past in the very year of this publication Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi and choral directors Tiia Loitme and Ants Soots won the most reputed record award Grammy and young composer Helena Tulve the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers held in Paris. This book, suggested by the Estonian Music Council, attempts at offering internationally significant information on the current situation of Estonian music by presenting biographies of more important Estonian composers, conductors, musicians and musicologists. The most difficult task was the selection: those 100 or so personages introduced on these pages form the most eminent, yet only a fragmentary part of contemporary Estonian music scene. The primary focus has been set on the most active of the living Estonian musicians who directly shape the musical life of this country today.
