The so called “short twentieth century” saw Britain and Finland at war and in peace with each other. The Cold War created a troubled relationship between a major Western power and a frontline state within the Soviet sphere of interest, while the end of the conflict facilitated a transformation of their relations and views of each other in the European Union of the 1990s.
From War to Cold War explores selected themes of Anglo-Finnish interaction ranging from foreign policy, the war years and post-war military strategy to issues of economic, cultural and party political interaction. Established historical interpretations are contrasted with the findings of new research and novel perspectives, facilitated by the opening of archives and primary sources in the 1990s.
The authors are leading experts of British and Finnish history and Anglo-Finnish relations. They represent the joint co-operative efforts of the scholarly communities in both countries to enhance an understanding of their nations´ experience of a troubled century.
